Nordic Bio-Graphite (NBG) is accelerating the transition to a net-zero industry by supplying fossil-free, bio-based graphite. Graphite is the dominant material in lithium-ion batteries, including those used in electric vehicles, with an average EV containing about 70 kg of graphite. It is also essential for Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF) in fossil-free steel production. However, conventional graphite production emits an average of 17 kg of CO₂ per kg of material, making it one of the most carbon-intensive components in clean energy technologies. At the same time, the EU is 98% dependent on imported natural graphite, exposing critical industries to significant geopolitical and supply chain risks. NBG has developed the first scalable process to produce fossil-free graphite from biochar, a carbon-rich material derived from biomass. The method, based on two patent-pending innovations from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, reduces energy use by 70% and chemical inputs by 95% compared to traditional production methods. Our bio-graphite has been validated for key industrial uses, meeting the technical performance requirements for battery anode materials and EAF steel electrodes. This demonstrates the potential to decarbonize high-demand applications while strengthening Europe’s raw material autonomy.
