Insects, rodents and mould affect stored feed material in silos and warehouses, with losses identified when quality declines

Senior Business Development at Japfa Pte Ltd

About

Tribolium beetle populations can increase in silos and warehouses, particularly during seasonal surges that require proactive monitoring and management. Insect activity and mould growth can reduce storage life and affect the quality of stored material. Variations in the moisture content of corn entering the silo can also reduce dryer efficiency and create conditions that support infestation. Impact. Pest and mould activity can affect both the quality and quantity of stored corn and broken wheat, resulting in recurring financial impact. Because pest pressure is seasonal and recurrent, effective monitoring and preventive measures are needed to manage potential losses consistently from one storage cycle to the next.

Success Criteria

Establish a measured infestation level for each silo and season, supported by consistent monitoring rather than inferred after the fact, and quantify the material affected by pests and mould over each storage cycle.

Scope

Stored feed material degrading biologically in silos and warehouses. Moisture at intake is included because it creates the conditions an infestation needs; it also appears in Statement 1, where it is a measurement problem rather than a pest one.
