Integration of Membrane Bioreactor and Membrane Capacitive Deionization for Municipal and Industrial Wastewater Reuse
About
Technology Overview:
-
Membrane Bioreactor (MBR): Highly effective in removing organic contaminants, currently at TRL 9.
-
Membrane Capacitive Deionization (MCDI): Offers higher water recovery and better energy efficiency compared to Reverse Osmosis (RO), with more flexibility in tuning water quality. Currently at TRL 7-8.
Current Status: The combined MBR-MCDI process is at TRL 7, indicating it is not yet fully commercialized but holds significant market potential.
Advantages:
-
MBR: Effective in organic contaminant removal.
-
MCDI: Higher water recovery, better energy efficiency, and lower operational costs compared to RO.
Challenges:
-
MBR: Performance and membrane fouling need further study in industrial applications.
-
MCDI: Needs further development to reach full commercialization.
This project aims to harness the strengths of both technologies to create a cost-effective and efficient solution for wastewater reuse, addressing both environmental and economic challenges.
