About
The Open Innovation Challenge (OIC) is a multi-month collaborative innovation format run by greenCHEM — a joint initiative of TU Berlin, FU Berlin, and HU Berlin. Unlike a hackathon, the OIC is designed for challenges that require real experimental work and scientific depth.
Interdisciplinary research teams are matched to your challenge and spend several months working on it with access to university lab infrastructure, structured mentoring, and regular checkpoints with you as the challenge partner.
How it works
-
Challenge Co-Design — In 1–3 structured sessions, we translate your challenge into a precise challenge statement. IP rights and confidentiality are agreed in writing before teams begin.
-
Kick-off & Working Phase — Teams start experimental work with access to university labs and analytical infrastructure. You join regular feedback rounds and an optional company visit.
-
Interim Presentation — Teams present mid-point results. You provide feedback and help steer the direction before the final phase.
-
Final Pitch & Follow-up — Teams present to a jury. IP-relevant results are secured in coordination with transfer offices. A structured follow-up 4–6 weeks later captures whether further collaboration or licensing interest has emerged.
