The European packaging sector is facing a structural transformation driven by the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). By 2030, all packaging placed on the EU market must be recyclable, effectively threatening the viability of legacy multi-layer materials—such as paper coated with EVOH and PE—currently relied upon by the pharmaceutical industry for moisture and oxygen barriers.
Our deep-tech materials project is engineering a solution: a 100% bio-based, liquid-applied barrier coating designed as a drop-in replacement for synthetic plastics.
We utilize fungal chitosan extracted from industrial citric acid fermentation waste. This allows us to bypass the severe ecological footprint, high costs, and allergenic liabilities of traditional marine-derived (crustacean) chitosan. When formulated into a shear-thinning coating, our biomaterial applies at microscopic coat weights, providing severe tortuosity against water vapor and oxygen ingress while ensuring the underlying cardboard or flexible paper remains a fully repulpable mono-material.
We are currently in the pre-prototype R&D phase, actively seeking B2B validation from mid-sized packaging converters and pharmaceutical brands. We are working to define exact target specifications (such as Water Vapor Transmission Rates and line-speed compatibility) to guide our chemical engineering lab work as we prepare for upcoming deep-tech funding programs.
Seeking R&D partners (pharma & packaging converters) to validate our bio-based barrier coating for PPWR 2030. We want to discuss your target specs (e.g., WVTR) and explore early LOIs to guide our chemical engineering and MVP development.
