The Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology (acib) is an applied research centre that helps companies develop sustainable products and manufacturing processes. We connect industrial needs with expertise in biocatalysis, enzyme engineering, microbial biotechnology and bioprocess development.

For the biobased chemicals community, we offer joint R&D on enzymatic synthesis, fermentation-based production and the conversion of renewable feedstocks and industrial side streams into valuable compounds. Our expertise supports applications in specialty chemicals, functional ingredients, personal care, coatings, adhesives and biobased materials.

We work with industrial partners to identify suitable biological production routes, improve enzymes and microbial production systems, and develop processes for further scale-up. Projects can address technical challenges such as selectivity, yield, productivity and product recovery.

Collaboration with acib provides access to our own R&D capabilities, as well as experts, laboratories and research infrastructure across Austria. We undertake contract research, develop collaborative R&D projects and build consortia for national and European funding programmes.

We welcome discussions with chemical producers, formulators, technology providers and end users seeking alternatives to conventional synthesis, new biobased ingredients or better ways to use renewable resources.
