Ukrainian railways is the national railway operator of Ukraine - 100% state-owned and vertically integrated, with infrastructure, traction, operations and rolling stock under one roof. It is one of the largest SOE in the country and the only railway operator in the world with four years of combat-tested resilience experience.
Workforce: approximately 165,000 employees - the largest employer in Ukraine
Network: 20,000+ km of 1,520 mm-gauge track - Europe’s 3rd largest network; 4 of the 10 pan-European TEN-T corridors cross Ukraine
Role in the economy: carries roughly 63% of national freight and about 30% of passenger transport; since 2022 the only operating international transport mode (airports closed)
Wartime role: simultaneously a military-logistics backbone, a civilian evacuation system (4.2 million people evacuated, including around 1 million children) and an economic lifeline (grain and container export corridors)
Key competencies: large-scale rail operations under continuous attack; a layered protection doctrine; and rapid recovery capabilities
