About

ReMAP is designed to strengthen the capability to monitor and assess Maritime Spatial Planning (MSPs). REMAP develops models and web tools based on an innovative technical framework, making the most of already operative data infrastructures, data collections and EU initiatives.

ReMAP will deliver 10+1 independent, reusable, combinable, operational, publicly available data tools. The use of the tools will enable interoperability, data sharing and performance assessment. The Member States (MS) will have support to assess operative MSPs, increase data interoperability, consistency and transboundary cooperation, and interlinks across policies (MSP and MSFD).

The ReMAP consortium builds on the advances of the Technical Expert Group (TEG) on MSP data and EMODnet, which develops harmonized EU MSP layer. The technical framework combines a modular approach (for in-depth analysis) with an integral approach (for comprehensive assessment): 10+1 simplified analytical modules and related (web) tools cover environmental, economic, social, governance, and safety aspects. This approach decreases the complexity of the assessments and, at the same time, increases the probability of being reused by the wider MSP community.

Usability is a critical asset. Hence, the ReMAP framework will be developed and tested by the consortium in multiple contexts: at the local level (Galicia, Spain) and on two cross-border use cases: the Western Mediterranean sub-basin, applied with Spanish, French, and Italian MSP (distributed approach); and for the Baltic basin (centralized regional approach).

Stakeholder participation backs the co-development and technology uptake process. Delivering tangible and sustainable outputs to policy and practice supports the best innovative response of EU MS to their common challenges in monitoring and revising their MSPs and, thus, in effectively implementing the MSP Directive.
