Vilnius Gediminas technical university (VILNIUS TECH) is a deep engineering tradition holding and innovative Lithuanian university that trains creative and highly qualified specialists. The university is a leader in the field of technological sciences and Arts (Architecture) with modern and labour market-oriented approach to studies in the Baltic Sea Region. Scientific research and experimental development projects are carried out in 13 institutes, 3 scientific centers. 22 research laboratories. It also provides over 100 study programs across various engineering and technology fields.

VILNIUS TECH specializes in both technological and management domains. On the technological side, it has strong expertise in construction engineering and infrastructure design, material science (including development and testing of advanced construction materials), mechanical and environmental engineering, sustainable urban systems and sustainable water management solutions.

One of the university’s strengths lies in developing innovative materials and structural systems tailored to modern urban challenges. It has the technical capability to support the design, testing, and implementation of permeable pavement technologies, especially in the context of improving rainwater management and reducing surface runoff in urban environments.

From the managerial perspective, VILNIUS TECH has extensive experience in leading complex research and innovation projects. It ensures smooth coordination, timely deliverables, effective risk management and structured dissemination strategies. The university’s team has participated in numerous international consortia, including under Horizon, COST, Interreg and bilateral cooperation programs.

Our R&D&I cooperation portfolio includes projects on sustainable construction, green infrastructure, smart mobility, often bridging academic research with real-world implementation in collaboration with public institutions and industry partners.

Topic(s) of interest for R&D on Lightweighting

Development and use of novel or alternative advanced lightweight materials including optimized manufacturing processesSubstitution of conventional (raw-)materials with sustainable and lightweighting alternatives with a lower ecological footprintUse of digital technologies to optimize lightweighting design for circularity, lifecycle assessment and material tracking in the field of lightweighting
