About
Since its foundation 30 years ago, the Saxon Textile Research Institute (STFI) has been a strong innovation partner and reliable service provider on behalf of its customers. The non-profit institute tackles technical and social issues with an open, interdisciplinary and reliable approach. Textile materials have always characterised its activities. STFI's work focuses on technical textiles, nonwovens, lightweight textile construction, functionalisation, recycling, digitalisation and Industry 4.0. A main focus is on textile routes that are suitable for processing recycled materials. One technology is the production of nonwovens from high-performance fibres such as carbon fibres. All nonwoven-based processes are available for the production of random fibre or highly oriented semi-finished products. In the future, the STFI will continue along the path of contemporary and application-oriented research and establish the Centre for Textile Sustainability in the near future.
Topic(s) of interest for R&D on Lightweighting
Development and testing of lightweighting design and manufacturing conceptsDevelopment and use of novel or alternative advanced lightweight materials including optimized manufacturing processesSubstitution of conventional (raw-)materials with sustainable and lightweighting alternatives with a lower ecological footprintInnovative approaches in the areas of ease of disassembly, reparability, recyclability, and reuse of lightweighting componentsUse of digital technologies to optimize lightweighting design for circularity, lifecycle assessment and material tracking in the field of lightweightingDevelopment of transferable and scalable business models for circular lightweighting design and manufacturing
