Košice is the second-largest city in Slovakia, with a population of approximately 240,000, and serves as the economic and cultural hub of eastern Slovakia. Situated on the Hornád River near the borders with Hungary, Ukraine, and Poland, Košice boasts a rich history dating back to its first mention in 1230. The city is also a centre for education and innovation, home to several universities and a growing IT sector. Its strategic location and infrastructure, including an international airport and major railway connections, make it a key gateway to eastern Europe. The city became a European Capital of Culture in 2013 and is a member of major European networks and initiatives such as the Green City Accord, the Covenant of Mayors on Climate and Energy and the EU Mission 100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities.
