DLR is the national aeronautics and space research centre of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its extensive research and development work in aeronautics, space, energy, transport and security and defence is integrated into national and international cooperative ventures.
We are present in 30 locations in Germany: Cologne (headquarters), Aachen, Aachen-Merzbrück, Augsburg, Berlin, Bonn, Braunschweig, Bremen, Bremerhaven, Cochstedt, Cottbus, Dresden, Geesthacht, Göttingen, Hamburg, Hanover, Jena, Jülich, Lampoldshausen, Neustrelitz, Oberpfaffenhofen, Oldenburg, Rheinbach, Stade, St. Augustin, Stuttgart, Trauen, Ulm, Weilheim and Zittau. Also, we run offices in Brussels, Paris, Tokyo and Washington D.C. Currently, we currently have 11,786 people working for us.
In the 2024 financial year, our budget for research and operations amounted to 1,701 million euros, 801.9 million euros of which was third-party funding acquired through competition. The budget for in-house research and development in the space sector totalled 545.6 million euros, while the budget for aeronautics research was 422.2 million euros. At the moment, we operate 192 large-scale research facilities.
