The Lab for Social Informatics at Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences is an interdisciplinary research and innovation environment exploring how digital technologies and social contexts shape one another. Combining perspectives from computer science, psychology, the social sciences and design, the Lab develops digital solutions that are not only technically sound, but also inclusive, equitable and socially responsible.
Operating as a Living Lab, it brings together citizens, civil society organisations, public authorities, companies and researchers throughout the innovation process—from understanding needs and framing challenges to co-design, prototyping, experimentation in real-life settings, evaluation and transfer. Particular attention is given to people and perspectives that are often overlooked in technology development.
The Lab’s research focuses on responsible and human-centred AI, gender-responsive innovation, diversity and non-discrimination, digital participation, work and organisational change, education, entrepreneurship, mobility and social services. Its methodological portfolio combines participatory and co-creative approaches with human-centred design, qualitative and quantitative research, field studies and real-world experimentation.
Embedded in Heilbronn’s dynamic research and innovation ecosystem, the Lab connects regional challenges with European and international research networks. It acts as a bridge between research, technological development, policymaking, professional practice and people’s everyday experiences. By making the societal implications of technology visible at an early stage and enabling stakeholders to shape innovation together, the Lab contributes to practical, evidence-based solutions for an inclusive digital transformation.
