Asahi Kasei has developed the large-scale alkaline water electrolyzer Aqualyzer™ for hydrogen production, leveraging its four decades of experience in chlor-alkali electrolysis. Aqualyzer™ has a proven track record, with more than 10,000 hours of operation in a single project. The system allows on-site replacement of membranes, electrodes, and electrolytic cells, minimizing downtime for maintenance. In March 2024, Asahi Kasei launched its multi-module hydrogen pilot plant in Kawasaki, marking a key step toward 100 MW-class alkaline-water electrolysis systems. Four 0.8 MW Aqualyzer™ modules are being tested under realistic conditions, including with fluctuating power from solar and wind, as well as during maintenance and low power supply during nighttime.
