Hidroelectrica has as main field of activity : "Production, transmission and distribution of electricity" and main activity: “Generation of electricity”. The main activities carried out by the company are generation of electricity in hydropower plants and sale of electricity and provision of system services for the National Energy System. Secondary activities: performance of management services for the waters from own storages, by providing raw water, discharge regulations, flood protection, discharge insurance and other common water management services; ensuring navigation on the Danube River by means of locking; carrying out the control and ensuring the attenuation of the flood waves for the transit of the catastrophic discharges in the hydropower developments on the interior rivers under the administration of Hidroelectrica. If the increased flows endanger material goods and human lives, through the Ministerial Committee for Emergency Situations within the Ministry of Waters and Forests and County Committees for Emergency Situations, the company contributes to a very important extent to limiting and eliminating these situations.

Hidroelectrica manages a diversified electricity generation portfolio, amounting to 188 power plants with an installed capacity of 6,480 MW in hydropower and wind capacities (including 5 pumping stations with a capacity of 91.5 MW), designed to generate a total annual production of renewable electricity of 17.68 TWh, with ambitious development plans, both by building new hydropower, wind and solar capacities, and by acquiring companies holding such capacities or projects in advanced stages of development (RTB - Ready To Build at least).
