The Laboratory for battery development and testing at the Center for development, demonstration and training for carbon-free technologies (DUBT) is a state-of-the-art R&D facility focused on the development, validation, and transfer of knowledge in advanced energy storage systems.
The laboratory integrates the entire value chain of battery technologies—ranging from materials research, cell design, and manufacturing to performance and safety testing, validation, and pilot-scale production. It serves as a strategic interface between fundamental research and industrial application, supporting policymakers and the public sector in evidence-based decision-making.
Infrastructure and Capabilities
· Glovebox cluster for cell preparation:
A glovebox cluster of 10 interconnected dry chambers equipped for single- and multi-layer pouch cell fabrication under controlled inert atmosphere, tailored for the development of solid-state batteries and lithium metal technologies.
· Pilot production line:
A flexible pilot line for assembling pouch and prismatic cells (5–10 Ah) in a –60 °C dew point dry room, enabling prototype customization and optimization for specific applications.
· Cell testing and validation:
Comprehensive testing of various cell formats with real-time monitoring of key parameters (temperature, SOC, stability) to assess performance, safety, and reliability under realistic operating conditions.
· Advanced characterization tools:
Includes high-resolution cryo-FIB microscopy for detailed analysis of electrode and electrolyte microstructures, supporting structure–property correlation and performance optimization.
· General analytical facilities:
Standard laboratory equipment for complementary analysis and material evaluation.
Strategic Importance
The laboratory bridges the gap between scientific innovation and industrial deployment by:
· Advancing technology readiness: Enabling the progression of new materials and concepts toward higher TRLs.
· Enhancing industry collaboration: Facilitating direct technology transfer and co-development of market-ready solutions.
· Developing human capital: Providing hands-on training for students and professionals to build competencies in sustainable and low-carbon technologies.
The Laboratory for battery development and testing aspires to become a national and international reference center for research, innovation, and training in advanced battery technologies—accelerating the transition toward a carbon-neutral and energy-independent future.
