Start Up (Seed)

Harpenden, United Kingdom

After 8 years of R&D in the Philippines, Straw Innovations is unveiling its first integrated rice and straw co-processing system. Its award-winning technologies work even in deep mud where traditional balers fail and have low capital costs. The Straw Traktor™ is able to harvest twice as much straw per hectare as the best commercially available alternatives and uses 50% less fuel per tonne of straw collected. The company is using this platform technology to create opportunities for rice farmers to grow valuable straw mushrooms and gain additional income, powered by solar PV and batteries.

About me

Craig Jamieson originally trained in horticulture and has a master’s degree in International Rural Development with ‘Distinction’. He has 20 year’s experience in SME management as well as in consultancy and scientific research, specialising in sustainable agriculture and biomass. Prior to starting Straw Innovations, his consultancy work took him across Africa and Asia for clients including the UK Government, UN FAO, World Agroforestry and the International Rice Research Institute.

Craig led an international research team uncovering the barriers to rice straw collection and use. Subsequently, with support from the UK Government, he established an industrial pilot plant collecting waste rice straw. Straw Innovations was born and Craig’s team is now taking it to first commercial scale in the Philippines.
