Introduction on Special Session Series – Advanced Mobility

To shape the future of mobility, the Advanced Mobility Expert Network (AMExNet) presents a special session series, “Advanced Mobility,” at EKC 2025. The series consists of three sessions, each with a distinct theme, organized across three divisions: Built Environment & Engineering Design (BEED), Mechanical & Aerospace Technology (MA), and Electrical/Electronics Engineering & Information Technology (EI). This session series aims to explore how mobility is deeply connected not only to technological ecosystems but also to urban environments and everyday life. From spatial and societal reorganization to critical reflections on smart (high-tech) vs. unsmart (low-tech) mobility, and the key role of ICT in connecting people to essential services, this series provides a platform for interdisciplinary discussion and fosters collaboration between mobility experts from Europe and Korea.

Session Overview:
🔹 [BE3 – 08/27 16:50] Reshaping Urban Movement, Space, and Community
This session explores how mobility is interwoven with the design of urban spaces and civic life. Before the roundtable, two speakers will each give concise framing presentations to seed the conversation. Through proposals rooted in systems thinking, citizen-driven innovation, and comparative urban analysis, speakers raise questions about how mobility can support more inclusive, adaptive cities. The presentations will open a broader roundtable discussion on how to harmonize mobility changes with spatial and social restructuring—focusing on themes like participatory planning, equitable access, and resilient communities.

🔹 [MA4 – 08/28 11:00] Smart and Unsmart Mobility Solutions
While smart mobility technologies (e.g., autonomous vehicles and AI-based systems) continue to advance, this session invites critical reflection on whether high-tech innovation alone can meet today's complex mobility challenges. Presenters propose case-based insights into international collaboration, intelligent traffic systems, and sustainable transport applications (including in the marine sector). These inputs lay the foundation for a discussion that contrasts “smart” solutions with “unsmart” strategies (such as policy design, behavior change, and local adaptation) to build mobility systems that are resilient, equitable, and fit for purpose.

🔹 [EI9 – 08/28 16:30] ICT in Mobility, Communication, Education, Healthcare and More
This session explores the broader role of ICT in shaping connected and inclusive mobility ecosystems. Presenters propose conceptual and technical approaches—from mapping diverse mobility patterns and enabling autonomous mobility services to designing data spaces that ensure sovereignty and interoperability. These contributions lead into a discussion on how ICT can support access to not just transportation, but also education, healthcare, and culture—framing mobility as a digital infrastructure for everyday life.

About AMExNet:
The Advanced Mobility Expert Network (AMExNet) was initiated in 2023 by the Korean Scientists and Engineers Association in Germany (VeKNI e.V.), with support from the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies (KOFST). AMExNet is now expanding across Europe and aims to grow into a global network. AMExNet contributes to addressing current mobility challenges, advancing mobility technologies, proposing policy alternatives, and fostering international cooperation. Our ongoing activities include organizing workshops, webinars, and joint events across Europe, in close collaboration with Global R&D Strategy Centers established by the Korean government.
