About me
In 2010, Chris was a Lead Author of the Geothermal Chapter of the IPCC renewable energy report (SRREN), in 2014 won the prestigious NZ Geoscience Society Hochstetter Lecturer Award, in 2020 the NZ Geothermal Association “Contribution Award” and in 2021 the inaugural “Friend of the Geothermal Institute Award” from the University of Auckland. He has been a session chairman and keynote speaker at 25 geothermal conferences, meetings, and workshops in 16 countries, and he also peer reviewed operational management of three New Zealand geothermal fields (Wairakei, Rotokawa and Mokai) as Peer Review Panel member and provided advice on technical issues related to resource consents for Ngatamariki, Wairakei, Ngawha, Taheke, Tauhara and Ohaaki. Chris has convened five international geothermal workshops and presented at 94 conferences, so his efforts are familiar to both commercial and research workers within the global geothermal community. Along with numerous other consulting roles, Chris spent two years in Indonesia as a measurements engineer through GENZL for Pertamina (Kamojang 1979-1981) and four years in the Philippines (through KRTA for PNOC-EDC 1981-1985) working as an advisor on geothermal resources specializing in geophysics and reservoir physics, and he has since undertaken due diligence assessments and development strategy studies of six geothermal resources in the Philippines, one in the USA, one in Turkey, one in Italy and eight in Indonesia (Awibenkok, Darajat, Kamojang, Karaha-Bodas, Lahendong, Bukit-Daun, Sungai-Penuh, Sorik Marapi). Chris has also been a lecturer in geothermal geophysics at the University of Auckland, an external examiner for the Geothermal Institute Postgraduate Diploma Course, and an external examiner for PhD and MSc thesis students at both Auckland University and Victoria University of Wellington. In November 2022, he was awarded, along with co-authors, the "Geothermal Institute Best Geothermal Earth Science Paper Award”. Chris’s career publication record includes 478 citeable publications, 70% as first author, including 115 peer-reviewed or refereed papers, 200 consultancy reports and 163 others (internal science reports, abstracts or published online presentations).
