I am a reservoir engineer with a background in high enthalpy geothermal reservoir modeling and reactive transport modeling.

My organisation

The Geothermal Energy & Geofluids group studies how fluids like water, CO₂, and hydrocarbons transfer heat and pressure in the Earth's crust. Using simulations, lab experiments, and fieldwork, we explore geothermal energy systems, CO₂ storage, and groundwater flow. Our work supports resource exploration, energy extraction and conversion (to heat, electricity, or fuels), Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), energy storage, and environmental sustainability.

About me

James Patterson obtained his BSc and MSc at the University of Texas at Austin before completing his Doctrate at ETH Zurich. He has worked at a researcher and consultant in the realms of high enthalpy geothermal systems and InSAR ground surface deformation monitoring, working with clients from around the world. His current interests are reactive transport modeling of reinjected CO2 in geothermal reservoirs and using Fourier Neural Operators to make fast and accurate forecasts for future reservoir performance.
