Dr Nayem Hassan
Nayem Hassan is a Chemical Ecologist, currently working as Managing Director, Russell Bio Solutions Ltd, UK. Dr Hassan has been involved with Bio-rational crop protection for over 20 years and has specialised inInsect pheromone, biopesticide, biostimulant development, field testing and market promotion. He has carried out PhD research work at the Natural Resources Institute of the University of Greenwich, UK between March 2003 and June 2007. Nayem has started work with Russell IPM since September 2007 as a senior scientific officer. To date he supervises a dynamic research and development team in Russell IPM Ltd.
During his PhD studies Dr Hassan worked on the pheromone of the legume pod borer, a major pest of legumes in African and Asia. In the laboratory the main aspects of the work involved isolation of the pheromone by extraction and air entrainment; detection of the pheromone components using electrophysiological recording from the insect antennae; analysis of the pheromone by gas chromatography (GC) and GC coupled to mass spectrometry; bioassay of the natural and synthetic pheromone using a wind tunnel. He also won a fellowship to visit the International Centre for Research in the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in India to carry out field trials of new pheromone lures and traps.
As such Dr Nayem Hassan is an accomplished entomologist with a wide range of experience in both field and laboratory and good knowledge of both the academic and commercial world in the UK and other countries. Dr Hassan has also been working as visiting professor at Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari, 70010 Italy, Masters degree program on “Precision Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for fruit and vegetable crops Insect pheromone application in Mediterranean fruit and vegetable crops. Dr Hassan has extensive short-term overseas biological control research experience in Asia, Middle East and Africa. Nayem is a member of the International Society of Chemical Ecology (ISCE), International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC). He participates in many professional conferences organised by International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC), International Biocontrol Manufacturers' Association (IBMA) and other crop protection organisations.
