European modular electronic platform for the replacement and reconditioning of critical modules in multipurpose industrial servers

Iñaki Garcia

Head of Technology and RD at Orbital Critical Systems

Madrid, Spain

About

The project aims to develop a 100% European modular electronic platform for the replacement, redesign and reconditioning of critical modules in multipurpose industrial servers (aeronautics, space, rail, etc.), in order to reduce dependence on non-European components, extend the useful life of equipment and strengthen technological autonomy. The initiative is based on a modular architecture that allows for the selective updating of critical components, facilitating interoperability, reparability and sustainability of the system in demanding industrial environments.

In addition, the project envisages the development of standardised methodologies for obsolescence analysis and life cycle management of electronic modules, making it possible to anticipate replacement needs and minimise downtime in critical infrastructures. This preventive approach will facilitate the transition of industrial users to a more resilient ecosystem aligned with European policies on technological sovereignty and the circular economy. Advanced monitoring mechanisms will also be incorporated to enable real-time assessment of module status and prediction of failures using machine learning techniques.

The initiative also aims to establish a stable framework for collaboration between technology companies, research centres and user industries, thereby promoting the creation of a European value chain around the refurbishment and redesign of industrial hardware. To this end, it will promote the definition of common standards, interoperability between manufacturers and the transfer of knowledge to strategic sectors such as automation, energy and defence. The result will be a robust, scalable technology platform capable of adapting to future needs in highly critical industrial environments.
