Forschungsfabrik Mikroelektronik Deutschland (FMD) / Fraunhofer Mikroelektronik

The Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (Forschungsfabrik Mikroelektronik Deutschland, FMD) is a collaboration between 13 Fraunhofer institutes and the 2 Leibniz institutes FBH and IHP. It serves as the central point of contact for all matters related to research and development in the field of micro- and nanoelectronics in Germany and across Europe.

As a one-stop shop, FMD brings together advanced technologies and system solutions from its collaborating institutes to provide a tailored, comprehensive portfolio.  Established in 2017 as a virtual umbrella for joint research collaboration, FMD has grown into one of the largest of its kind with more than 5,500 employees and a uniquely broad range of expertise and infrastructure.

Through cross-institutional  initiatives such as the APECS pilot line, the German Chips Competence Centre (G3C), the Green ICT @ FMD competence center, as well as networks such as Chipdesign Germany, FMD creates end-to-end structures spanning design, manufacturing, integration and system application. This helps reduce critical dependencies and brings together key technologies in Europe, including advanced packaging, heterogeneous integration, chiplet technologies, novel computing architectures, and resource-efficient ICT, for further development and testing.
