Büyükçekmece Municipality

Büyükçekmece Municipality was established on 9 February 1958. Today, it is one of, 39 district municipalities affiliated with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. There are 24 neighborhoods within the municipal boundaries. According to 2025 data, services are provided to a population of 283,239, including 139,094 men and 144,145 women. With an institutional capacity of 35 directorates and 1,737 personnel, the municipality adopts an integrated service delivery model as a modern, flexible, and coordinated public institution.

 The municipality aims to integrate into national and international urban networks through its strategic partnerships and research-based collaborations. It prioritizes the development of innovative practices in the fields of sustainable development, climate adaptation, social inclusion, and digital transformation. In this context, the 2050 Büyükçekmece Vision represents a strategic planning initiative that sets long-term development perspectives based on participation and evidence-based decision-making. Within the scope of this vision work, participatory mechanisms have been established through thematic and focus groups representing different segments of society—primarily women, youth, older adult, and children. In line with local needs analyses, priority intervention areas have been identified and measurable targets have been defined to shape local policy frameworks.

Through this approach, Büyükçekmece Municipality aims to position itself as a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable urban ecosystem aligned with the principles of multi-level governance.
