About
The Trans-Scalar Urban Nexus (BIONEX) project leverages bio-tectonic principles to enhance urban ecosystems, focusing on how vacant structures can foster sustainable interspecies design. The concept of a "nexus" highlights interconnections between urban spaces and natural systems, emphasising a circular economy of biodiversity. BIONEX extends natural, self-sustaining principles into urban planning by examining how nature reclaims neglected spaces. This project, involving partners from Türkiye, Italy, Romania and Norway, conducts pilot studies in Izmir, Milan, and Bucharest to develop and replicate approaches that integrate biodiversity across different scales and interactions between natural and urban elements. Methodologically, the project integrates physical bio-material testing and VR technologies for immersive design, using simulations to visualize interspecies collaboration and inform adaptive urban spaces. By fostering a bio-centric urban perspective, BIONEX enhances biodiversity and ecosystem services through collaborative engagement, contributing to paradigm shifts in urban planning, and architecture. Aligned with the objectives of DUT Call 2024’s Topic 2, BIONEX promotes circular urban models that enhance biodiversity. Utilising AI and advanced data integration, the project extends ecological insights from vacant spaces to thriving urban landscapes, tackling urbanization challenges and championing sustainable, adaptive cities. BIONEX develops prototypes, legislative frameworks, and implements community-based ecological strategies, aiming to create urban environments that support diverse species, maintain ecological balance and advance a biodiversity-driven approach to urban design.
