Decarbonising districts through local thermal networks and energy flexibility

Managing Direcotre, Responsible for Research and Innovation at e7 energy innovation & engineering

Vienna, Austria

About

e7 is looking to join a consortium for PED Topic 2 and/or PED Topic 3. Our focus is the practical decarbonisation of existing buildings and urban districts through integrated technical, organisational and financial solutions.

We can contribute expertise in:

  • strategic heat planning and district-level decarbonisation pathways;

  • development of local renewable heating and cooling systems, including low-temperature and ambient-loop networks;

  • technical and economic assessment of buildings, energy assets and thermal networks;

  • financing strategies, business models and risk allocation;

  • governance, ownership and organisational models for multi-owner and mixed-use districts;

  • implementation processes and scalable delivery models;

  • operation, monitoring and optimisation of local energy systems;

  • flexibility of thermal networks, energy assets and buildings, including storage, sector coupling and coordinated operation.

For PED Topic 2, we are particularly interested in scalable solutions for existing private and mixed-ownership housing areas, covering the full process from planning and financing to implementation and long-term operation.

For PED Topic 3, we aim to investigate how buildings, thermal networks, generation units and storage systems can be operated as an integrated and flexible district energy system. This includes viable market, governance and incentive models for activating flexibility and distributing costs and benefits fairly.

We are interested in cooperation with cities, housing providers, energy utilities, technology partners, research organisations and financing experts. e7 can support Austrian demonstration cases and contribute to technical-economic analysis, business models, stakeholder processes and implementation strategies.
