PED 2: Cars as Community Batteries
About
Electric vehicles are more than just transport – they are mobile energy storage units. With millions of EVs on the road, their combined battery capacity offers a powerful, yet largely untapped, resource for supporting the electricity grid.
At Kamp C (Flanders, Belgium) we are developing a bidirectional charging hub where cars can both charge and discharge energy, acting as a neighbourhood battery. This living lab will demonstrate how EVs can provide local flexibility, reduce grid congestion, and strengthen renewable energy integration – without costly grid reinforcements.
By combining interoperable hardware (ISO 15118-20, OCPP 2.0.1), smart energy management, and community participation, we test the full ecosystem: from technical interoperability and market access to user acceptance and business models. The results will feed into European policy, accelerate V2G adoption, and serve as a replicable model for other regions.
We offer a strong Flemish consortium already in place: Kamp C (project lead & living lab host), Whatt’sNext (V2G architecture & integration), Campina Energie (energy community & co-investment), and the Municipality of Bonheiden (local pilot & policy testing). Together, we cover the full value chain from community engagement and business models to technical interoperability and policy insights.
We are looking for European cities, energy cooperatives, leasing partners, CPOs, and technical integrators to join forces and scale this approach across Europe.
