About

SYNCHRO-FREIGHT aims to develop and demonstrate a set of interoperable digital tools and AI-enabled solutions that integrate rail, inland waterways and short sea shipping data into existing logistics platforms, and enables real-time visibility, predictive planning, and agile synchromodal decision-making.

Technological Approach

The project will design advanced modules that can be embedded into current Transport Management Systems (TMS), Freight Forwarding Systems, and Port and Terminal solutions. These tools will provide:

  • Real-time tracking of multimodal shipments using IoT-enabled smart containers and Galileo-based positioning;

  • Predictive analytics for Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) and network performance;

  • AI-driven disruption management suggesting alternative routes and modes;

  • Data connectors aligned with the European Data Act, Common European Data Spaces, and eFTI regulation;

  • Synchromodal planning tools that dynamically shift freight between modes based on cost, time, emissions, and capacity.

Use Cases and Data Integration

The project will map existing datasets (rail timetables, terminal slot availability, barge schedules, vessel tracking, corridor information) and develop harmonised data models and semantics enabling end-to-end multimodal visibility. Special attention will be given to intra-European freight flows of 500–1000 km, where modal shift potential is highest. Business models will be developed together with the stakeholders to support collaboration between shippers, freight forwarders, terminals, and carriers.

Demonstration

Solutions will be validated in two large-scale pilots along major European freight corridors with strong geographical balance. Pilots will involve real industrial sectors (e.g., FMCG, automotive, chemicals) and will demonstrate:

  • Integrated multimodal planning and booking;

  • Real-time monitoring and exception management;

  • Smart container management;

  • Improved first/last mile coordination.

Strategic Outputs

SYNCHRO-FREIGHT will deliver:

  • A portfolio of deployable interoperable tools for multimodal logistics;

  • Quantified value generation for shippers and operators;

  • Contingency planning frameworks for supply chain disruptions;

  • Policy and regulatory recommendations to remove barriers to multimodal transport;

  • A roadmap for scaling solutions across Europe in cooperation with Europe’s Rail JU and other initiatives.

Impact

The project will directly support EU goals to double rail freight and expand inland waterway and short sea shipping, enabling a more sustainable, flexible and competitive European freight transport system through practical, data-driven and market-ready innovations.
