EXACT-AI: Explainable AI for Circular and Zero-Defect Manufacturing
Professor in Operations Management and Business Innovation at University of South-Eastern Norway
KONGSBERG, Norway
About
The project would develop an integrated AI-driven manufacturing platform that combines real-time quality control with adaptive process optimisation to improve efficiency and sustainability across industrial operations. Using explainable AI models, the system would continuously monitor production lines, detect anomalies or process drift, and automatically adjust parameters to reduce defects, scrap, and energy consumption. In parallel, the project would introduce AI tools to optimise the use of recycled and regenerated materials, enabling smarter material flows while maintaining high product quality.
To ensure practical deployment and scalability, the solutions would be built on secure industrial data spaces that allow confidential and trusted data sharing between partners. The technologies would be validated in four to five pilot factories across Europe, representing different manufacturing sectors and production environments. This real-world validation would demonstrate the technical, environmental, and economic benefits of the approach, while also delivering a clear business case and pathway for wider industrial adoption.
