Joeri Aerts

As a scientist active at the interface of fundamental and translational biomedical research, my work focuses on the development of innovative immunotherapeutic strategies targeting cancer and chronic viral infections such as HIV. With over 25 years of experience in the biomedical field, I specialize in designing and coordinating cutting-edge research projects that bridge academic insight with clinical and industrial application.

I have led and contributed to multidisciplinary research programs involving advanced immunological techniques, therapeutic mRNA platforms, and nanoparticle-based delivery systems. My team’s work has contributed to the preclinical validation of novel vaccine candidates and immunomodulatory interventions, many of which are geared toward clinical translation.

I have extensive experience in:

• Managing collaborative national and international consortia across academia, biotech, and clinical settings.

• Supervising and mentoring PhD students, postdocs, and technical staff within regulated research environments.

• Steering projects from basic discovery to preclinical validation, including GMP-compliant development for advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs); an FWO-SBO project (saRplix) was recently selected for funding.

In addition to my research leadership, I am actively engaged in the regulatory landscape for ATMPs and biotechnological products:

• As an ATMP developer, I have been involved in multiple stages of regulatory filing, scientific advice procedures, and interactions with competent authorities.

• I serve as an external scientific expert and reviewer for regulatory agencies including the Belgian Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products (FAGG) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

• I lecture on regulatory science and ATMP development, contributing to the next generation of professionals in this rapidly evolving field.
