TrussLab
About
We develop TrussLab, a CAD platform that runs in the browser for designing custom frames, fixtures, equipment supports and prototype structures. It combines standard tubes and profiles with generated joints and attachments, concentrating 3D printing on the complex connections while using readily available stock material for the main members.
TrussLab is a system of connected editors built around a modular, Lego-like philosophy. The Frame Editor defines the overall structure and its relationships. The Attachment Editor creates the reusable joints, clamps, mounts and interfaces used within it. Users can assemble existing building blocks or design their own, expose their parameters and reuse them across projects.
Key capabilities include:
- Parametric structures: define dimensions and relationships through named properties and expressions. Changes propagate through dependent geometry, helping users revise a structure and its attachments while preserving design intent.
- Custom building blocks: create reusable components from geometric primitives and Boolean operations. Define adjustable dimensions, connection ports and clearance geometry so a component can adapt to its role in different assemblies.
- Flexible frame geometry: work with members at arbitrary angles, including triangulated and non-orthogonal structures. Supported stock includes solid and hollow circular sections; Pro access adds rectangular and square sections, plus L, T, I and U profiles.
- Generated joints and controlled clearances: combine attachments into printable connections using solid bridges, struts or grouped bodies. Reconciliation tools calculate member-end adjustments at junctions, with automatic strategies and manual control over individual junctions.
- Reversible design history: undo, redo, replay construction steps and explore alternative versions without losing earlier work. Narrated presets show how structures are built and can be taken over at any stage for further editing.
- AI-assisted modeling through MCP: connect a compatible AI assistant through the Model Context Protocol to inspect, create and modify parametric frames through conversation. Describe a structure, adjust dimensions, select attachments and iterate on alternatives. Agent edits use the native modeling operations and history, so the result remains an editable TrussLab model that users can continue working on visually. The hosted connection is available to enrolled Pro users, with explicit authorization for access to the selected frame or workspace.
- Manufacturing and CAD output: export printable parts as STL or 3MF, together with a basic bill of materials and stock-member lengths. Pro STEP export supports CAD handoff with positioned assembly components; stock members are represented as solids and generated attachments as faceted surfaces.
- Local model storage and portability: work directly in the browser, save models locally and use workspace archives to back up or transfer projects.
Our focus is recurring engineering work where dimensions, member sizes, mounting positions or interfaces change between projects. Potential applications include test rigs, inspection fixtures, machine and equipment frames, tooling supports, robotics prototypes and workshop assemblies.
At MSV, we would like to meet engineering and manufacturing teams with a real frame-design workflow to evaluate, as well as fabrication partners and engineering service providers interested in combining standard stock with custom connections. We welcome discussions around a representative project, the current design process and the outputs needed for fabrication.
