About

The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) is a Greek governmental research organization with ~400 personnel and research facilities in Athens, Crete and Rhodes. Its mission is to promote research for the understanding of the aquatic ecosystems functioning ensuring that they provide their services to future generations; promote sustainable exploitation of marine resources; support the regional development; promote sustainable aquaculture; sensitize the public at large on issues related to the hydrosphere and its conservation and provide advice to national, Mediterranean and EU institutional bodies on environmental sustainability and management. HCMR also acts as an advisor to the state regarding the implementation of the Water Framework and Marine Strategy Framework (WFD; MSFD) Directives; on issues shaping fisheries policy; and on oil pollution from maritime activities and accidents. HCMR also holds the national Oceanographic Data Centre (HNODC), and the ‘Aquacosm’ mesocosm facilities at its premises in Crete.

HCMR comprises three Research Institutes: the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture (IMBBC)(IMBBC – Welcome to IMBBC – Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture), the Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters (IMBRIW) (IMBRIW – by HCMR) and the Institute of Oceanography (IO) (HCMR – Institute of Oceanography)
