Innovative techniques for large-scale mapping of Atlantic blue crab distribution by Università di Ferrara

The project aims to develop an innovative large-scale monitoring system for the Atlantic blue crab, an invasive species that is causing severe ecological, economic, and social impacts across the transitional and coastal ecosystems of Emilia-Romagna. Current monitoring efforts in the northern Adriatic are fragmented and lack quantitative data, making it impossible to build predictive models or design effective management strategies. To address this gap, the initiative proposes a rapid, non-invasive mapping method using high-resolution sonar combined with artificial intelligence and automated object-detection tools to estimate the density and distribution of medium and large blue crabs across lagoons, river mouths, and coastal waters. Field testing will take place in highly diverse environments such as the Goro lagoon, the Comacchio wetlands, the Ravenna piallasse, and adjacent coastal areas, ensuring that the method can be easily replicated and scaled across the wider northern Adriatic and beyond. The expected impact is the creation of the first reliable, quantitative monitoring system for this invasive species, providing essential baseline data for developing management, mitigation, and conservation strategies. Technical challenges (such as sensor calibration in low-visibility, dynamic coastal environments) will be addressed through extensive pilot sessions, progressive machine-learning training, and close collaboration between researchers, technology providers, and local stakeholders. The partnership will involve companies producing advanced marine monitoring systems (e.g., Codevintec Italiana, STONEX, ULTRALITICS), applied ecology researchers, and aquaculture cooperatives from areas most affected by the species, ensuring both technological robustness and practical relevance for resource managers.
