Coastal ATB for the reproduction of cephalopod molluscs by CESTHA

About
The proposed project aims to establish a Coastal Biological Protection Area (ATB) along the Emilia-Romagna shoreline to support sustainable fishing and aquaculture while safeguarding marine ecosystems. The initiative focuses on boosting the reproduction and conservation of the common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis), a species of high economic value that is currently under pressure due to intensive fishing. Within the protected area, eco-friendly artificial nesting structures will be installed to encourage egg laying and monitor reproductive success, while trawl fishing will be banned and low-impact artisanal fishing actively promoted. The project also integrates circular-economy actions, such as transforming fish-processing waste into compost, feed, or bioplastics, and encourages the adoption of hybrid or electric engines to decarbonize the local fishing fleet. Expected impacts include the recovery of cuttlefish stocks, greater ecological balance in coastal habitats, improved economic stability for small-scale fishers, and the creation of new sustainable value chains. By involving schools, citizens, and tourists in outreach activities, the initiative also strengthens environmental awareness and community stewardship. Potential challenges—such as resistance from non-artisanal fishers, complex authorization procedures, technical difficulties with nesting systems, and long-term financial sustainability—will be addressed through participatory governance, technical support from the University of Bologna, and diversified funding strategies. Led by CESTHA with the collaboration of the University of Bologna and local artisanal fisheries, the project builds on successful FEAMP and INTERREG experiences, offering a replicable model for integrated, sustainable management of coastal marine resources.
