Modular concrete Sea Hives with anti-typhoon features for habitat restoration & repopulation by FSC-TECH EU Srl

About
The proposal focuses on developing modular concrete Sea Hives designed to restore degraded coastal habitats while providing robust anti-typhoon coastal protection. FSC-TECH EU has already tested these structures in real conditions, including in Florida, showing their strong ability to attenuate wave energy and support biological repopulation thanks to their high surface-to-volume ratio and porous hexagonal geometry. Unlike conventional artificial reef systems, the patented FSC technology eliminates steel reinforcement and uses minimal cement, enabling a 90% lower carbon footprint, exceptional durability (with no expected degradation for up to 1,000 years), reduced weight for easier offshore installation, and full recyclability or relocation at end of life. The concrete can be produced using saltwater, recycled aggregates, or locally sourced materials such as crushed shells, enhancing environmental compatibility and circularity. When deployed along the Adriatic coast, Sea Hives could provide adaptive hydrodynamic protection, remain invisible below the waterline, reduce sedimentation issues, and create new marine habitats tailored to local ecosystems. Remaining technical challenges (mainly related to mechanical performance, bonding between modules, and safe handling during installation) can be resolved through a focused six-month experimentation phase, which FSC is willing to co-finance. The company already collaborates with CSCON and Gemini Impianti on production technologies and is advancing related R&D through the ECOSISTER-funded SIAIVER project. The proposed solution has strong potential to strengthen coastal resilience, regenerate biodiversity, and offer a scalable, low-impact alternative to traditional coastal infrastructure in Emilia-Romagna.
