About
Information about our initiative:
‘Green and Circular Ports for a Litter-free Mediterranean’ aims to identify ways to improve and upgrade waste management policies, infrastructure, and practices in the ports of Mediterranean islands, setting new sustainability standards within the framework of the circular economy.
Mediterranean islands face particular challenges regarding waste management and circularity and we want to work with them to identify these challenges and potential solutions to address them. We will hold interviews with key stakeholders in five ports located on Mediterranean islands to document the main difficulties they face, key gaps and needs that exist regarding waste management and circularity, the good practices they apply, and their views on what more needs to be done to promote and implement more circular practices. The insights and perspectives gathered will feed into the development of a Joint Action Plan for circular ports on Mediterranean islands, which will be prepared and presented in May 2026 at an event in Cyprus, as part of the European Maritime Day celebrations. A representative from each participating port will be invited to this event.
This initiative is funded by the BeMed Foundation.
Your involvement:
We are looking for organisations/individuals with insights about wast management and circularity in Mediterranean island ports, or who have contacts with such ports. What we need is to have a short interview to understand views and perceptions regarding gaps/needs in waste management and circularity, as well as suggested or implemented solutions to address them. The interview will not take more than 30 minutes. In May 2026, we will also invite key interviewees to participate in the above-mentioned workshop in Cyprus to co-design and announce the Joint Action Plan for Green and Circular Mediterranean Island Ports
