Cluj-Napoca, Romania

Brief history The Cluj-Napoca branch of the Romanian Academy was established in 1949, in the context of the restructuring that was taking place at the time at the level of the high scientific and cultural forum and of Romanian higher education. The 1948 Education Law and the creation of the new Academy, the RPR, in the same year, determined the removal from the university system of the scientific research institutes, established during the interwar period within the four universities existing in Romania (Bucharest, Iași, Cluj and Cernăuți) and their organization as independent institutes, receiving exclusively scientific research tasks. If in Bucharest, where the headquarters of the Romanian Academy operated, the respective institutes became independent, having legal personality to this day, in the university centers of Iași and Cluj Branches of the Romanian Academy were established, to which the scientific research institutes, which were until then part of the universities in the respective centers, were subordinated. Through its activities, the Cluj-Napoca Branch of the Romanian Academy contributes to the development of knowledge as well as in related activities (organization of doctorates, dissemination of research results through publications, consultancy, participation and organization of scientific sessions) in the following fields: history, archaeology and art history, socio-human sciences, folklore, linguistics, mathematics, geography, astronomy, speleology and others. The branch also participates in conducting interdisciplinary research, in partnership with other institutes from the Specialized Sections of the Romanian Academy or with other partners from the country and abroad, as well as in the design of chapters of the strategy developed by the Romanian Academy for the development of Romania in the next twenty years.
