About

IDIBAPS (Fundació de Recerca Clínic Barcelona – Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer) is one of Southern Europe’s leading translational biomedical research institutes, bringing together more than 2,000 professionals and 98 research groups integrated within the Hospital Clínic Barcelona and the University of Barcelona ecosystem. Its mission is to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into improved prevention, diagnosis and treatment for patients through close interaction between basic, clinical and population-based research.

Research activities are organised into five major scientific areas: Biological Aggression and Response Mechanisms; Respiratory, Cardiovascular and Renal Pathobiology and Bioengineering; Liver, Digestive System and Metabolism; Clinical and Experimental Neuroscience; and Cancer. These are complemented by interdisciplinary groups in Primary Care, Nursing, Clinical Pharmacology and Multimodal Imaging Biomarkers, as well as institutional multidisciplinary programmes focused on translational cancer research, brain disorders, metabolism and disease, autoimmune neurological disorders, and lymphoid neoplasms.

IDIBAPS provides a complete translational research pipeline, from discovery science and advanced preclinical models to clinical validation, investigator-driven clinical trials, implementation research and innovation transfer. The institute manages an extensive portfolio of competitive national and international projects and participates in major European initiatives, including Horizon Europe collaborative projects, ERC grants, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, Innovative Health Initiative projects, EATRIS and numerous international research infrastructures and networks. In 2025, IDIBAPS had 931 active competitive projects.

Researchers have access to seven state-of-the-art Core Facilities that support the full research cycle: Biobank, Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting, Functional Genomics, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Medical Statistics, Clinical Trials Unit and Research Computing. These shared facilities provide advanced technologies, expert methodological support, data analysis services, biobanking, clinical research infrastructure and high-performance computing resources.

IDIBAPS is strongly committed to research excellence and impact. In 2025, the institute generated 1,595 original scientific articles, participated in 1,150 clinical trials, managed 94 patent families, maintained 77 active licence agreements, and had 11 active spin-off companies. The institute is accredited as a Health Research Institute by the Carlos III Institute of Health, is a member of the CERCA network, and forms part of the AECC Scientific Foundation network of excellence.
