About

KIST Europe, established in 1996, is the European branch of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST). Located in Saarbrücken, Germany, it serves as a strategic hub for scientific and technological collaboration between Korea and Europe. The institute conducts interdisciplinary research across three major areas: Advanced Biotechnology, Energy & Environment, and AI Convergence, addressing emerging challenges in health, sustainability, and digital transformation.

In Advanced Biotechnology, KIST Europe develops innovative technologies for biosensing, bioanalysis, and human-relevant biological models. Its research encompasses advanced biosensors, organoid and stem-cell-based models, environmental and chemical safety assessment, and analytical approaches for understanding biological responses to emerging substances and materials.

The Energy & Environment research area focuses on technologies supporting the transition toward a sustainable and carbon-neutral society. Key activities include next-generation electrochemical energy storage, hydrogen production and storage, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), sustainable electrochemistry, and environmentally friendly industrial processes.

In AI Convergence, KIST Europe combines artificial intelligence with advanced sensing and data-driven technologies, with a particular focus on wearable sensor-based digital health. By integrating AI with wearable biosensors and continuously collected physiological data, the institute develops technologies for personalized health monitoring, early detection and prediction of health conditions, and intelligent healthcare solutions. AI technologies are also applied to bioimage analysis, biosensor data interpretation, and other interdisciplinary research to accelerate scientific discovery and innovation.

KIST Europe works closely with leading European universities, research institutes, and industrial partners, including Saarland University and Forschungszentrum Jülich. Through these international networks and interdisciplinary research activities, the institute promotes technology transfer and practical innovation while serving as an important bridge between the Korean and European research and innovation ecosystems.
