Bukovinian State Medical University (BSMU) — Chernivtsi, Ukraine

Bukovinian State Medical University (BSMU), founded in 1944 in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, is a leading public medical university with 4 faculties, 48 departments and ~6,500 students. BSMU's innovation capacity is evidenced by a large, active research base: over 420 researchers with registered ORCID profiles, more than 13,000 scholarly outputs (about 2,400 indexed in Scopus) and 88 patents, with a steady output of roughly 900-1,000 publications a year.

BSMU's own strengths are concentrated in high-output applied clinical and biomedical fields: cardiology and arterial hypertension, endocrinology and diabetes, perinatal medicine and obstetrics, the human microbiome and infectious diseases, and experimental pathophysiology and pathomorphology. A distinctive niche is research on melatonin and chronobiology in reproductive health and oncology. BSMU also leads innovation in medical education - simulation medicine, scenario-based emergency-care training and digital-health-augmented clinical reasoning, supported by a dedicated Simulation Center - and is developing digital health and AI-supported diagnostics.

A further distinctive strength is interdisciplinary work at the intersection of biomedicine, mental health and social sciences: trauma, resilience, psychosocial support and recovery of war-affected and displaced populations, relevant to current EU priorities on health, security and post-crisis recovery.

Clinically, BSMU offers access to a defined patient population in western Ukraine - a region under-represented in existing cohorts - through 32 affiliated hospitals and an active Bioethics Committee, enabling patient recruitment, biosample and data collection and multicentre trials.

Established Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ participation makes BSMU an innovative, low-risk partner.
