Established in 2023 through the merger of the Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM) and the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC), GIMM is a leading private Portuguese research institute with a bold vision for advancing fundamental scientific knowledge in life science and biomedicine and its transformative impact on global health and well-being. Committed to excellence, innovation and societal impact, GIMM aims to shape the future of science and contribute to the well-being of all. To accomplish these goals, GIMM fosters fundamental, translational and clinical research in diverse and complementary research areas including Molecular & Cellular Biology, Immunology, Host-Microbe Interactions, Neurosciences, Oncology, among others. The research conducted at GIMM explores biology across scales, in space and time, from molecules to ecosystems. Ultimately, GIMM aims to develop a multidisciplinary research environment that will drive the reconstitution of biological systems and modelling of their dynamics, promoting the prediction of disease states and outcomes. Importantly, life and biomedical sciences have become more complex with the emergence of ‘big data’ and the amount of accessible information. To both understand organisms in the context of their changing environments and to extract medically meaningful data, GIMM’s scientific community combines expertise in diverse areas of biology, physics, medicine, computer science, and others to develop quantitative and qualitative approaches, including those integrating artificial intelligence and theoretical modelling. Currently operating across two sites in the Lisbon area, GIMM hosts 37 research groups, over 730 staff (including 443 researchers), and 12 state-of-the-art scientific and clinical platforms that underpin its research output, namely Biobank, Bioinformatics, Bioimaging, Electronic Microscopy, Flow Cytometry, Genomics, Proteomics, Metabolomics, Mission Lab, Histopathology, Rodent and Aquatic.
