About

PERSONALISED MEDICATION SAFETY AND POLYPHARMACY: LATIN AMERICAN CLINICAL RESEARCH PARTNER

Organisation: Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo (ESPOCH), Ecuador

Target call: HORIZON-HLTH-2027-01-CARE-02 – Personalised approaches to reduce risks from Adverse Drug Reactions due to administration of multiple medications.

RESEARCH FOCUS

ESPOCH seeks to join a European-led Horizon Europe consortium developing and evaluating personalised approaches to prevent adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in patients taking three or more medicines. We are particularly interested in multimorbidity, older adults and people with chronic inflammatory and musculoskeletal diseases.

The intended collaboration would combine clinical pharmacology, pharmacogenomics, pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics, relevant biomarkers and digital clinical decision support. ESPOCH proposes to contribute clinical research, real-world implementation and assessment of external validity in Latin American healthcare settings, not to claim existing pharmacogenomics infrastructure.

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE AND DATA READINESS

ESPOCH has experience in epidemiological research on rheumatic diseases in Chimborazo and in developing RHEUMA-SAFE AI, a prospective clinical research protocol focused on AI-assisted quality and safety of rheumatoid arthritis care, including medication reconciliation and clinician oversight.

Rheumatology clinical settings in Riobamba maintain longitudinal records of patient follow-up, medications, laboratory investigations and imaging. Their sample size, medication exposure detail, ADR ascertainment, suitability for biomarker studies and permitted research uses require a formal feasibility and data-quality assessment. Existing records should not be assumed to contain pharmacogenomic results.

POTENTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Rheumatology expertise and clinical characterisation of patients with multimorbidity and complex medication regimens.

  • Assessment of medication histories, potential interactions, safety signals and treatment outcomes where documented.

  • Feasibility studies for retrospective analyses and prospective recruitment, subject to institutional and ethical approvals.

  • Potential external validation of AI-enabled medication safety tools and biomarker-informed risk stratification, with European partners leading relevant technology and laboratory work.

  • Evaluation of clinician and patient acceptability, implementation barriers, equity, health-service use and real-world feasibility.

PARTNERS SOUGHT

We seek an eligible European coordinator or established consortium combining clinical pharmacology, geriatrics, pharmacogenomics, biomarker laboratories, epidemiology/biostatistics, EHR/AI decision support, health economics, regulatory science and ethics. We welcome patient and healthcare-system partners experienced in medication safety and multimorbidity.

EXPECTED COLLABORATION

ESPOCH could contribute as an academic and clinical research partner within a multicountry study, helping assess applicability in Latin American patients and healthcare settings. Study design, data sharing, recruitment, biomarker testing, intellectual property, budget and institutional responsibilities would be agreed after feasibility assessment and applicable approvals. Collaboration should generate evidence on clinical utility, cost-effectiveness and integration into routine care.
