About

The Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases “Dedinje” (IKVBD), located in Belgrade, Serbia, is the largest highly specialized institution for the treatment of acquired cardiovascular diseases in Southeastern Europe. It is also the youngest and the only institution of its kind in Serbia accredited for scientific research. Since its accreditation as a Scientific Research Organization (SRO) in 2020, the cumulative published Impact Factor (IF) has surpassed 1900.

The Institute comprises several clinical units, including Clinical Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery, Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Unit, and the Department of Cardiovascular Research. To support scientific research activities, IKVBD established a Center of Excellence with 10 dedicated members at the forefront of cardiovascular medicine and medical technology development.

IKVBD serves as a teaching base for three medical faculties: the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Belgrade, the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Kragujevac, and the Faculty of Medicine in Banja Luka. Currently, 36 doctors from IKVBD hold academic and collaborative titles, while 80 physicians are engaged in doctoral studies.

The Institute boasts a cutting-edge CardioView3D LAB, featuring a state-of-the-art VR simulator and vascular simulator equipped with advanced software for modeling, designed to assist and optimize complex surgical procedures while significantly enhancing educational and learning opportunities.

The Institute is actively involved in all major national projects focused on strategically enhancing the research ecosystem in Serbia. It participates in the Serbia Accelerating Innovation and Entrepreneurship Project (SAIGE) (Projekat SAIGE), implemented by the Ministry of Science, Technological Development, and Innovation.

As part of the BIO4 Campus (BIO4 – New Bioeconomy Hub in Europe) (BIO4 – New Bioeconomy Hub In Europe), IKVBD will play a pivotal role through its Center for Translation in Cardiovascular Medicine, contributing to research in atherosclerosis, cardiogenetics, and regenerative medicine. Advanced facilities, such as a hybrid operating block with state-of-the-art equipment and a campus vivarium, will support cutting-edge research and surgical procedures.

Academic projects are central to the Institute's scientific activities. Currently, IKVBD teams are working on seven projects, resulting in numerous publications in leading international journals and presentations at prominent conferences. Additionally, the Institute actively participates in 32 commercial clinical trials aimed at developing new drugs and methods.

The IKVBD successfully participated in four calls within the SAIGE project, securing a total of 25 projects. Through the "Innovation and Ideas" programs, 14 projects led by young researchers were funded, while 11 projects were approved under the "Proof of Concept" (POC) programs, aiming to develop and implement innovative ideas capable of transforming medical practice.

In addition to the SAIGE projects, the Institute is implementing two projects funded by the Innovation Fund (program: Technology Transfer) and one strategic cooperation project with China, financed by the Ministry of Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia.
