About

Established in Pisa (Italy) in 1987, the Sant’Anna School of Advance Studies (SSSA) is an internationally recognised public university with a unique position in the Italian higher education system. It offers undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programmes across applied sciences, including Law, Political Science, Economics and Management, Engineering and Medicine. SSSA provides an excellent inter-disciplinary learning and research environment in both social and experimental sciences, with a strong European and international outlook and a special commitment to innovation in education, training, and research.

Within SSSA, the Institute of Law, Politics, and Development (DIRPOLIS) focuses on inter-disciplinary research in law, political sciences, and sustainability. Its core mission is to produce innovative, action-oriented research that scientifically supports effective decision- and policy-making in both public and private sectors. The DIRPOLIS’s International Law faculty consists of renowned professors and researchers with expertise in areas such as the use of force in international relations, international humanitarian law, international and European human rights law, disaster law, international criminal law, the regulation of modern and emerging technologies (including artificial intelligence, cyber operations and autonomous weapons systems, surveillance, and dual-use technologies) as well as terrorism and cultural heritage protection in times of crisis. In such fields, the DIRPOLIS’s International Law faculty has successfully led and participated in numerous research and training projects funded by the EU and other international and national donors.
