The Alzheimer Bulgaria Association (ABA) was founded in 2003 as a non-profit organization for the public benefit (NGO). Its mission is to change the attitudes, policies and practices in Bulgaria with respect to people with dementia and their caregivers in order to improve their quality of life. It seeks to improve the quality of life of both those suffering from various forms of dementia and their relatives. ABA employes all available tools – innovative medical approaches, widespread communication with variety of stakeholders including institutions and legislative bodies, direct support and trainings to families and caregivers. ABA is a member of Alzheimer Europe and Eurocarers. ABA is also a part of the global initiative Dementia Friends. The organization was established in Sofia, but currently we have two more branches registered in other Bulgarian cities. We collaborate and keep in touch with 1300+ members and followers from all over the country. We have two full time employees, five part-time employees and 22 regular volunteers. Our values are based on a firm commitment to protect the human rights, dignity and autonomy of people living with dementia. We believe that each and every person, touched by dementia has a right to
• A timely diagnosis (early diagnosis);
• Access to a doctor after the diagnosis to monitor the development of the condition;
• Person-centred, coordinated, quality care throughout the development of the condition;
• Fair access to treatments and therapeutic interventions;
• Be respected and valued as a unique person, able to contribute meaningfully to the community.
In order to fulfil our mission, we strive to create an environment where the voices of people with dementia and their carers will be heard. We work towards asserting the human and civil rights of people with dementia and their families. We challenge derogatory attitudes to older people, oppose the stigma associated with dementia, and promote health awareness to maintain efficient brain functions irrespective of age.
