Diabetes Research (β‑cell stress, biomarkers & therapy advancement)
Head of Public Funding at CBmed GmbH
Graz, Austria
About
CBmed offers translational diabetes research capabilities focused on unlocking biomarkers, protecting pancreatic β‑cells, and advancing therapeutic strategies in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. CBmed addresses diabetes heterogeneity by studying mechanisms underlying β‑cell dysfunction and loss, including the interplay between β‑cell stress and immune cell attraction, which is particularly relevant to understanding disease initiation and progression.
A core translational pathway is drug identification and repurposing: CBmed aims to identify and repurpose already approved, human‑safe drugs that alleviate cellular stress and thereby support β‑cell protection, with the goal of shortening timelines compared with de novo drug discovery and accelerating potential impact on patient care.
CBmed deploys state‑of‑the‑art in vitro and in vivo models to address mechanistic questions in both T1D (immune‑mediated β‑cell destruction with unknown root causes) and T2D (insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome features, and progressive β‑cell exhaustion).
