Human-Centered and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence for Healthcare
Associate Professor, Chair of the Health Research Theme, at BMS faculty at University of Twente
Enschede, Netherlands
About
Expertise in human-centered and trustworthy artificial intelligence for healthcare, covering predictive and generative models with focus on explainability, fairness, uncertainty, and personalized decision support.
At the University of Twente, we conduct research on artificial intelligence methods for healthcare applications that support clinical decision-making, diagnostics, risk prediction, and patient monitoring. Our work spans the full algorithmic pipeline, including data modeling, model development, evaluation, and clinical integration. We are not restricted to a single AI paradigm and work across predictive and generative approaches where appropriate.
A core element of our research is the development of AI systems that are transparent and aligned with clinical reasoning. We design explanation methods that support different clinical roles and use cases, while explicitly accounting for uncertainty, data quality, and heterogeneity. Fairness is treated as an integral part of model development, with methods to assess and mitigate bias and to ensure robust performance across patient subgroups.
We contribute to algorithmic developments for healthcare, including personalized and patient-specific modeling, multi-modal data integration, and adaptive decision support. Our research is grounded in real clinical workflows and is carried out in close collaboration with hospitals, clinicians, and interdisciplinary teams. We aim to support the safe, equitable, and effective adoption of AI in healthcare.
We seek participation in European collaborative projects that require strong AI methodology for healthcare, particularly in areas related to health system strengthening, quality of care, safety, and equitable health outcomes.
