Wearables, sensor AI and digital phenotyping

Professor of Pervasive Computing at Birkbeck College, University of London

London, United Kingdom

About

Birkbeck has been researching computer science since 1957, making it one of the oldest computing departments worldwide. Having a long-established reputation in data management and computational intelligence, we have evolved into a world-leading centre in AI and data science. Our work in on pervasive computing, human dynamics, privacy, and data‑driven methods has led to notable innovations in digital health including cloudUPDRS—a smartphone medical device—and PDkit, an open toolkit for digital biomarkers of Parkinson’s disease. We regularly contribute to sensor‑driven clinical research and trial deployment, for example analysing variability in digital outcomes and proposing metadata frameworks to scale technologies. Recent work on decentralised personal data stores and privacy‑preserving search promotes patient‑controlled health data integration and ethically grounded AI for healthcare innovation.
