Sex- and Gender-Informed Pathways and Risk Models to Reduce Cardiovascular Disease Burden

Research Assistant at Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH)

Thessaloniki, Greece

About

The aim of this project is to deliver a step change in cardiovascular disease research and care by systematically uncovering, integrating, and translating sex- and gender-specific health determinants, risk factors, and biological pathways into actionable prevention, diagnostic, and treatment strategies. By combining multidisciplinary mechanistic research with large-scale analysis of existing European cohorts, registries, and biobanks, and by leveraging advanced digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, the project will generate and validate robust sex- and gender-tailored risk models that capture life-course dynamics, hormonal influences, and intersecting biological and sociocultural factors. Through the meaningful integration of biomedical sciences with social sciences and humanities, the project will bridge the long-standing gap between sex-specific discovery and clinical implementation, enabling earlier detection, more accurate diagnosis, and more effective, personalised interventions for women and men. Ultimately, the project will provide healthcare systems with innovative, evidence-based strategies that improve equity, enhance clinical decision-making, and contribute to a sustained reduction in the burden of cardiovascular diseases across Europe
