Smart biosensors for health-relevant microbial biomarkers
About
Human-associated microbes (the human microbiome) play essential roles in maintaining health and contributing to disease. Shifts in microbiome diversity and metabolic activity have been shown to correlate with various health states, making them valuable targets for diagnostic monitoring.
Microbial activity and interactions lead to the production of a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds, such as volatile metabolites and dissolved signaling molecules, which can serve as proxies for microbiome function and indicators of host health or pathology.
We propose initiating a research project focused on the development of biosensors capable of detecting microbiome-derived compounds in saliva and/or exhaled breath. These biosensors aim to provide a fast, non-invasive, and efficient means of early diagnosis for digestive and respiratory diseases.
We are currently seeking funding and strategic partnerships to establish a robust framework for advancing the development and validation of these health-related microbial biosensors.
